Honoring Juneteenth in Orlando with Meaningful Celebrations

Three short years ago in 2021, Juneteenth became recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, but it’s been celebrated for over 150 years to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in our country.

Orlando has a rich African American history. The city was the first to elect an African American woman to city council and member of the county commission. South Street Casino, next to the Wellsbuilt Hotel, was a popular club back in the day that hosted famous musicians such as B.B. King and Ella Fitzgerald. Famous author Zora Neale Hurston, born in Alabama, lived and loved her town of Eatonville (north of Orlando) that she later claimed to be born there.

There’s much to uncover and celebrate regarding Black culture and history in Orlando. That’s why Juneteenth means so much and is celebrated as it is. We hope to see you at one of these meaningful events.
