Ride the Brand New Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad

Lately Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been making headlines with new rides and additions to the park. In 2018 they introduced two new rides to Toy Story Land. In 2019, they opened the highly anticipated Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This year they’ll introduce Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad, the first ever Mickey Mouse-themed ride in Disney park history. It’s slated to open in early spring, in time for spring breakers and summer vacationers to enjoy it. Read on for all the details of what to expect at the newest ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

What to Expect of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad

If you’ve ever been to Disney’s Hollywood Studios before, you may remember riding The Great Movie Ride located inside the Chinese Theater. This fan-favorite attraction took guests on a grand tour of classic movies and even put them in the middle of the action as the ride was hijacked midway through by bad guys from the movies. Unfortunately, The Great Movie Ride closed on August 13, 2017. Now, nearly three years later, you’ll be able to enjoy a ride in the Chinese Theater once more, this time on Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad.

As mentioned earlier, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad will be the first ride ever at a Walt Disney World theme park to star the mouse that started it all. That alone makes this ride a big deal but there’s more than one reason to ride it. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad will be a trackless dark room ride with a 2 ½ D technology – essentially a 3D attraction without the use of glasses. Inspired by Mickey Mouse, an animated TV series that’s been airing on Disney Channel since 2013, the attraction takes guests to the characters’ wacky cartoon world. At the start of the ride, you’ll premier a new cartoon that shows Mickey and Minnie getting ready for a picnic while Goofy boards a train to conduct it. Then, same as in The Great Movie Ride, you’ll become part of the action as you jump aboard Goofy’s train and zoom into the cartoon world.

According to Disney, more hidden Mickeys exist on this ride than anywhere else in the park, so keep your eyes peeled. The ride uses screens and modern animatronics, as well as those 2 ½ special effects. You might want to stow away your hats and glasses – we’ve heard it gets pretty windy in there!

Vacation Fun – An Original Animated Short with Mickey & Minnie

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad isn’t the only new attraction opening this spring at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The newly redesigned Mickey Shorts Theater, which features adorable seats that resemble Mickey’s iconic red shorts, will debut on the same day as the ride. The Mickey Shorts Theater will showcase an original animated short starring Mickey and Minnie called Vacation Fun.

After riding Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad, we suggest a trip to the Mickey Shorts Theater to watch the new animated short. Once the show’s over, you can explore life-sized recreations of Mickey’s world that are the perfect backdrop for your Mickey-themed vacation selfie.
