Last Call for a Taste of EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival
We love it when someone cooks for us. Even better is when that someone is a chef. For others, cooking like a chef is also fun. In this blog, we have a special treat for both types of people—a blog about EPCOT’s greatest food festivals and a special recipe with video instructions from Disney’s cookbook!
Make Reservations to Visit EPCOT
Health standards have changed with the current times and so has how Disney lets people into their parks. Check out our previous blog on how to book your reservation for a day at a Disney theme park. After making reservations, head over to EPCOT to enjoy the last month of A Taste of EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival. Following the heels of A Taste EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival is the A Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays beginning November 7. So even if you plan to visit later this year, EPCOT makes sure guests have plenty of food options to enjoy while visiting. EPCOT is this season’s epicenter for foodie delights.
Most Popular Orlando Food Festivals
It’s no secret that EPCOT’s food festivals are the most popular and most attended in Central Florida. Following the theme parks’ own theme, guests can sample cuisine found around the world – like a culinary global tour without needing a passport.
In these times with safety at the forefront of everyone’s mind, how we eat at EPCOT has also changed. All food must be consumed in designated eating areas where guests are not required to wear a mask because, well, you’re eating and drinking. This is a good thing as it helps you spend more time enjoying how the food is presented as well as how it smells and tastes. Disney is known for its high level of detail in the presentation. Past festival meal presentations remind us of edible plant arrangements or come in fancy plastic serving dishes that some guests may consider a collectible piece of memorabilia.
What does Disney Food Taste Like?
While we wait to visit the theme park and enjoy the festival food – by the way, admittance to the food festival comes with entry – we may wonder what the food will taste like. Reading the menu and scouring over the ingredients is one thing, but involving the senses provides the answer. Sure you can read and see that there are gluten/wheat-friendly (GF) dishes like the Crispy Pork Belly with Black Beans, Tomato and Onions and vegetarian (V) dishes like the Spicy Kenyan Vegan Corn and White Beans with Pigeon Peas, Quinoa & Ancient Grains Medley and Kachumbari Slaw. There are a ton of great dishes for everyone else including the savory Mongolian Beef Bao Bun sandwich or the Canadian Cheddar Cheese and Bacon Soup.
Cooking like a Disney Chef
Now while we wait patiently for our turn at the park, we can try our hand at making a dish from this season’s International Food & Wine Festival. In a generous move, EPCOT’s chefs released the recipe and cooking instructions for its popular plant-based dish – the Impossible™ Burger Slider with Wasabi Cream and Spicy Asian Slaw.
A few notes on the ingredients: Sambal is an Indonesian chili sauce sold in most grocery stores. Sambal typically comes in a plastic bottle with a green lid. Look for a rooster on the label of the more popular brands and the description “Ground fresh chili paste.”
When selecting ginger, make sure the skin is translucent. That shows the root, the part we eat, is relatively fresh. The skin should have an almost shiny quality to it. If the skin is a dull tan, the root has been out of the ground for a while but should still taste extremely well. Avoid roots with shriveled skin and any rotten ends.
In Central Florida, you can see papaya growing in many back yards. These fruiting trees fare extremely well in our sub-tropical climate zone, so they’re fairly easy to find in major grocery stores. Look for firm, green fruit in the store. With this and all the items listed above, the assumption you’re shopping in Central Florida. If you live and shop elsewhere, our suggestions may be moot.
Depending on where you live and shop, wasabi powder may or may not be hard to find. For this final item, visit an Asian grocery store near you as they should carry wasabi powder. It is a good spice to have in powder form as you can marinate meat with it as well as use it to spice up many dishes.
Disney’s recipe feeds up to six people, so make this for a family dinner or a special date night spent at home. Part of the fun of enjoying cuisine inspired by different cultures is preparing and cooking the food. The intimate interaction with food allows you opportunities to alter a few steps or adjust amounts to better match your taste. The best part is you will come away with a true sense of what Disney food tastes like – and at a fraction of the cost as it is at the theme park.
