Disney’s Aladdin Musical in Orlando
The new Broadway musical adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin is a whole new world filled with more vaudeville flair, sass, and action. Of course, it still focuses on the great love story between Aladdin, Jasmine, and the beloved Genie. But the revised Broadway version written by Chad Beguelin jazzes up the songs, dance, and adult humor Howard Ashman originally wrote into the lyrics of Disney’s 1992 musical animated movie.
Ride on a magical carpet ride through Akbar and rediscover the (newer) adventures of Aladdin in Orlando January 22 through February 9 at the Dr. Phillips Center. Don’t assume you’ll know what happens because you’ve seen the 1992 and 2019 movies. This isn’t a predictable show. Cue in the tap dancers and flashy cutlass swords! This cast works hard and has fun keeping you on the edge of your seat with new jokes, new songs, and tons of glamour. Even Genie, who was originally based on jazz legends Fats Waller and Cab Calloway, gets to explore his true roots.
Behind the scenes is an equally stellar cast of “who’s who” in Broadway. Alan Menken (Newsies) stays on to provide music same as he did for the 1992 animated movie. Lyrics from Tim Rice and Howard Ashman’s original treatment are still in with pizzazz added by Chad Beguelin. Casey Nicholaw (Book of Mormon and Something’s Rotten!) leads as director and choreographer.
Event though the Broadway musical is “A whole new world in a whole new way,” according to Chad Beguelin, it’s still appropriate for young audiences. Disney says viewers six years and older will enjoy the show, and Beguelin says adults on a date will also enjoy the show. That being said, everyone has to have a ticket to enjoy the ride.
