Celebrate Red Shirt Pride Day in Orlando

What’s the most magical way to mark the start of Pride month? Why, with a trip to Disney World of course! Back in the 90s, a small group of LGBTQ Central Floridians had the same idea. In June 1991 they held the first Gay Days at Magic Kingdom as a day to boost LGBTQ visibility by wearing red while enjoying the parks. What started as small movement became sea of red shirts in a wonderful show of LGBTQ pride and unity. The initial events were met with resistance and controversy, but over the years that has turned to acceptance and welcome. Now, this annual tradition draws hundreds of families and guests from all over the world. Disney even has Pride-themed merch, including rainbow striped Mickey ears.
Throughout the years the Gay Days events have undergone many changes. While the official Gay Days events are now held in August, Red Shirt Pride Day continues on thanks to the Kindred Pride Foundation.

Who can participate in Red Shirt Pride Day?

Everyone – the LGBTQ community and allies alike – is welcome to participate in Red Shirt Pride Day. Families, singles, couples, and friends are all invited to join the theme park festivities.

How do I participate?

At the Orlando theme parks
Red Shirt Pride Day isn’t an official Disney event which means there are no separate tickets needed and no itinerary so you are free to enjoy the parks as you like. Just wear your favorite red shirt and visit the theme parks during Red Shirt Pride Days:
• Thursday, May 30, 2019 – Disney’s Animal Kingdom
• Friday, May 31, 2019 – Disney’s Hollywood Studios
• Saturday, June 1, 2019 – Magic Kingdom
• Sunday, June 2, 2019 – Epcot

Around the world
In case your Orlando vacation doesn’t coincide with the above dates, you can still celebrate. The Kindred Pride Foundation envisions the holiday as one where everyone shows their support of inclusion, diversity, and kindness by wearing a red shirt, no matter where they are. Show your solidarity with the LGBTQ community and wear your best red shirt on June 1.

What other Pride events are there in Orlando?

Red Shirt Pride Day is a partner event to another popular Pride month tradition in Central Florida, One Magical Weekend. From May 31 – June 3, One Magical Weekend hosts pool parties and other events for the LGBTQ community. These events take place in some of Orlando’s most popular venues including Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and the House of Blues. If you’re visiting in October, be sure to join the fun at Orlando’s annual pride parade and festival, Come Out With Pride.
