4 Tips for Fighting the Summer Heat on Your Vacation

Summer is here in Orlando, and this is the time to enjoy vacations, beach time, and soaking up the sun. While there is a considerable amount of fun to be had, you can never be too careful when facing direct exposure to the sun. When you spend too much time out in the heat, you run the risk of dehydration and even heat stroke. Follow these four tips to prepare for the summer heat and ensure a great vacation.

  1. Use Sunscreen: Per the CDC in a 2013 survey, less than 50% of adults use sunscreen on their face and exposed skin. Most people overlook the necessity of sunscreen, but unfortunately, this leads to substantial risks to your health. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside, and reapply after swimming to protect yourself as efficiently as possible.
  2. Dress Smart: Just because it is hot out doesn’t mean you can’t cover up. It is always assumed that in the heat you should wear less to cool off, but actually, you should wear more to protect yourself from UV rays. Wearing breezy, lightweight fabrics such as cotton allow your skin to breathe better, and light colors reflect the sunlight away.
  3. Stay Hydrated: When it comes to the hot conditions of the summer, dehydration is a major risk for everyone. Staying hydrated is more than just drinking a lot of water; avoiding food and drinks that dehydrate you is just as important. Salty foods and caffeinated beverages, such as coffee and soda, dehydrate you substantially.
  4. Stick to the Shade: Just because it is incredibly hot out, doesn’t mean that you are doomed to constant exposure. Any effort you put toward minimizing direct exposure to harmful UV rays is helpful. From using a beach canopy to simply wearing a hat or using a parasol, every little bit of shade helps.
