10 Essentials to Bring to the Orlando Theme Parks This Summer
If you aren’t prepared, Florida summers will catch you off guard. The intense heat and afternoon rainstorms can quickly put a damper on your summer vacation plans as the weather can change drastically throughout the day. To ensure your summer vacation in Orlando goes off without a hitch, check out our guide on 10 essentials to pack in your theme park bag.
- Sunscreen
Sunscreen is a must for a day out at the Orlando theme parks. Use it before you get to the parks and remember bring it with you to reapply as needed throughout the day.
- Water
Don’t wait until you get in the park to purchase water. In the summer, even the journey from the parking lot to the theme park’s entrance could leave you parched, so it’s best to be prepared. To save money, bring your own refillable water bottle and refill as needed.
- Hat or Sunglasses
In addition to sunscreen, it’s wise to have something to shield you from direct UV ray exposure. Bring hats and/or sunglasses with you or pick some up at the park as a useful souvenir.
- Medications
Florida summers can cause some discomfort, especially if you aren’t used to the heat or pollen. Be prepared with a mini first-aid kit that includes allergy and pain relief medication, as well as hand sanitizer wipes, band aids, and anti-bacterial cream.
- Poncho or Umbrella
Summer is the rainy season in Orlando and afternoon showers can start as early as May. Stay dry (and save money) by purchasing an inexpensive poncho or umbrella beforehand. On sunny days, use the umbrella to shield yourself from harmful UV rays.
- Snacks
Visiting theme parks in the summer means long lines, not only at attractions but at restaurants as well. The heat and humidity can also zap your energy. Ward off hunger with snacks that will withstand heat well such as snack bars, grapes, apples, and trail mix.
- Portable fan
Keep cool with your own personal misting fan. These lightweight small fans fit easily in your bag and some of them can be worn around your neck for on-demand cooling during Florida summers.
- Plastic bag with change of clothes
Water fountain play areas and splash-filled rides may help you cool off, but what about after? While the heat will eventually dry your clothes, it might not be so comfortable, especially if you find yourself on an air-conditioned ride. Bring a plastic bag with a change of dry clothes and simply swap out your outfits after the rides.
- Bug spray
Mosquitos love the warm, humid Florida summers so protect yourself with some insect repellant. This is especially important if you plan to be at the parks after dusk when mosquitos are most active.
- A park map
Yes, the theme park’s app on your phone includes a map but grab a paper copy anyway. Between the strong sunlight forcing you to dial up the brightness and the high summer temperatures, your phone is prone to rapid battery drain and overheating. Keep your phone out of direct sunlight and use it only when necessary. Use your paper map for navigating the park, looking up show times, and more. In a pinch, it can also double as a makeshift fan or sun shield, and can even be used to collect character autographs
